  • About Puerto Morelos
  • Contact and Availability
Puerto Morelos began as a fishing village. Over the past two decades, the Mayan Riviera has exploded from Cancun straight down the coast to Tulum.  Puerto Morelos was largely ignored and and as a result has matured slowly and developed its own persona.

Most of the winter residents, or expats come from Canada, United States and Europe.
The population of Puerto  Morelos in 1995 was approximately 800 people. Currently, we estimate that the population has grown to 15,000. As a result of this increase, the town now has a great array of good restaurants. Restaurants featuring Argentinian, Italian, Uruguayan, Mexican, Canadian and American cuisine provide delicious and safe dining.  We have an English book store on the main square for your beach reading pleasure.

We have doctors, dentists and pharmacies in town.  Taxis park in the main square and at the crossroads of the main highway that takes you to North to Cancun, or South to Playa del Carmen or Tulum.

Getting around Puerto Morelos

Getting around in Puerto Morelos is easy. There are taxis available in the town square and up at the crossroads waiting for passengers debarking from buses.
 CCr
Buses run north and south every 15-20 minutes. The big buses, like ADO can take you to larger cities. For getting to nearby cities, consider the smaller and cheaper "collectivos".

A trip to Cancun in a collectivo (you can get off at Plaza Las Americas that has spectacular shopping and two cineplexes) will cost you around $2.00.

You can walk anywhere in Puerto Morelos, rent a car or rent a bike.  Car rentals are notoriously expensive in Mexico, so if you are a free spirit, consider taking buses when convenient.
Buses are plentiful, cheap and run all day long.

We are located 37 k.m. from Cancun, 20 minutes south of the Cancun International Airport and 25 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. From Playa, you can catch a ferry and visit Cozumel. From Pto. Morelos, you can take a bus to the Central (Centro) bus depot in Cancun and catch a taxi to Puerto Juarez to take a ferry to Isla Mujeres. NOTE: Watch your time on the island, ferry crossings diminish considerably after 5 p.m. unless you plan to spend the night.

What's there to do ?

Bicycle rentals, fishing tours, scuba diving and snorkeling are all available in Puerto Morelos. There is a Mayan Craft Market downtown Puerto Morelos, as well as a Mayan Spa in the jungle. A traveling Fruit and Vegetable truck parks by the church Wednesday mornings. Get there early to buy some of their excellent Oaxacan Cheese.

The beach side of town is know as Puerto Morelos.
Further up towards the main highway there is a colonia (colonias are neighbourhoods predominantly inhabited by Mexicans) called Los Pescadores and across the road another colonia called Zetina Gazca.

On the other side of the highway you can shop at a multitude of fruit and vegetable markets, buy freshly made juice, buy grilled and rotisserie chicken, do laundry and dine in a traditional Mexican Restaurant.

There are three gymnasiums in Puerto Morelos across the highway.

Tours can be arranged to visit Mayan ruins, cenotes, underground caves or a multitude of parks that are in this area, such as XOXOMILCO, Xcaret, Xel Ha as well as cenotes along the Ruta de Cenotes which is very close to Puerto Morelos.

CrocoCun Zoo is virtually in our back yard and provides an interesting afternoon, with a personal english speaking guide showcasing animals from the area. Inexpensive and very informative.
